Being unable to get together and play with other musicians this past year, I decided to write some things that would be more densely arranged, with much m...

  • @yinanzhou662

    I have a question. Going with a major 2-5-1 in Bb, if you go up the f7 arpeggio for the 2 chord, then descend from the 9th of the F7 chord using the rule with a halfstep between 2-1 and 1-b7, you end up on Eb or E I think, which is not a chord tone of Bbma7. What do you do there?

    • @billgrahammusic
      @billgrahammusic Місяць тому

      Take that Eb and use it to start a chromatic enclosure around the third of Bb. From there you’ve got a number of options, like coming up a chord from the 3rd of Bb, and coming back down the scale using the rule for Bb major (so altogether, Eb C# D F A C Bb A G Gb F Eb D C Bb, all 8th notes except for the last Bb, which is a quarter note on beat 4). Give that a try and let me know what you think.

    I always loved this song. To me it's right up there with all his other great songs like Good Vibrations, California Girls, God Only Knows... Brian wrote so many great songs after his heydays in the 60's. It's such a crime that the radio stopped playing his music.

    Hey Bill, thank you for this video! I have a serious question, and I hope I’m not coming off like I’m downplaying the validity of this system, as many people are getting great results practicing/implementing these rules. My question is if chord tones on downbeats is really what’s happening in bebop melodies? A lot of what makes a line work is the rhythm and change of direction. I doubt Charlie Parker practiced so that chord tones fell on downbeats, for example. I’m afraid that by practicing this, I’m leaving rhythm out of the questions(all lines start and end on downbeats and are just 8th notes with no change of direction). I used to play bass professionally and am now picking up piano for fun. Should I practice this? Or simply transcribe line and put them through 12 keys?

No nonsense, no beating around the bush, in depth and most importantly musical. Loved it. ❤ Would request such a lesson on enclosures too. I've tried the enclosures on Barry's chromatic scale and they sound great but I feel like there's more to these. Thats the only thing missing from this video.

    From 3:16 I think you got the half step rule for sixth degree wrong? It should have been 0 and 2 half steps based on a pdf I managed from somewhere but you are using 1 and 3 half steps. Can you please confirm if this is a mistake or a modification?

    I speak as a AFM member ....1971....have not paid my dues in a while though. Beach Boys Today side 2 may be their best album work. Pet Sounds was a huge disappointment and upon release only sold about 400k ...I don't think Brian was ever the same. It is certain that the BB were never the same after that album. It was followed by the single Heroes and V....which by their standards was a flop. They withdrew from the Monterey Pop, and were never again viewed as a cutting edge band.
